Ingredients

The chicken

  • 1 pound chicken tenders or chicken breast cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons chili-garlic sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or pure maple syrup
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 5 large green onions (scallions)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

The sauce

  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 ½ tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For serving

  • Prepared as needed brown rice
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (optional)

For stir fry veggies (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon canola or grapeseed oil
  • 12 ounces chopped vegetables

Instructions

  1. Marinate the chicken with soy sauce, chili-garlic sauce, sesame oil, honey, and baking soda for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Whisk together the sauce ingredients until smooth.
  3. Heat canola oil in a wok or large skillet and coat the chicken with cornstarch.
  4. Stir fry the chicken until golden and cooked through, then remove from the pan.
  5. Stir fry the vegetables until crisp-tender, then return the chicken to the pan.
  6. Add the green onions and pour in the sauce, tossing to coat.
  7. Cook until the sauce thickens, then serve hot with rice or quinoa.
