Ingredients

The brownies

  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup whole wheat pastry flour
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup Irish stout beer
  • ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips

The frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons Irish stout

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt the chopped chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, then let it cool.
  3. Sift together the whole wheat pastry flour, all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  4. Whisk the granulated sugar into the cooled chocolate mixture, then add eggs one at a time, stirring until smooth.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, then slowly add the beer, folding in the chocolate chips last.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  7. Let the brownies cool before removing them from the pan.
  8. For the frosting, beat the butter until fluffy, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and stout until smooth.
  9. Spread the frosting over the cooled brownies, slice, and serve.
