Ingredients

  • 12 ounces full-fat brick cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • cups confectioners’ sugar
  • cup unsweetened natural or dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1–2 Tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • a pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the softened butter and mix until combined.
  3. Incorporate the confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, 1 Tablespoon of milk, and salt, beating until creamy.
  4. If desired, add another Tablespoon of milk to thin the frosting slightly.
  5. Taste and adjust with more salt if needed.
  6. Store any leftover frosting in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
