Ingredients

Meat Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¾ pound ground beef
  • ¾ pound ground pork or Italian sausage
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • ½ leaf bay leaf
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 2 15-ounce cans crushed tomatoes
  • 6 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 15-ounce jar tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon chicken bouillon

Cheese and Layers

  • 1 8-ounce package lasagna noodles, uncooked
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat and brown the ground beef and pork.
  2. Add onion and garlic, cooking until the meat is well browned, then mix in the seasonings.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, water, and chicken bouillon.
  4. Simmer the sauce for 20-30 minutes, adjusting with water or tomato sauce as needed.
  5. Soak the lasagna noodles in boiling water for 30 minutes, then drain and rinse.
  6. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with egg, parsley, Parmesan, salt, and nutmeg.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a casserole dish.
  8. Layer the ingredients in the dish, starting with meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella, repeating the layers.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 50 minutes, removing the foil halfway through.
