Oven Baked French Toast

Ingredients

Brown Butter Caramel

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar

French Toast Bake

  • ½ loaf soft bread (challah, brioche, etc.)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 ¼ cup whole milk
  • 5 units eggs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tbsp vanilla

Eggnog Sauce

  • ½ cup plant-based eggnog
  • ½ cup heavy cream or plant-based milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp fresh nutmeg (grated)
  • ½ tsp salt

Cinnamon Sugar Dust

  • ½ cup icing sugar
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter by cooking it in a pot over high heat until it foams and turns dark brown.
  2. Combine the brown sugar with the browned butter and spread it in a 9x13 inch casserole dish.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  4. Cut the bread slices in half and arrange them over the caramel layer in the casserole dish.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, milk, sugars, salt, and vanilla, then pour it over the bread.
  6. Bake for 32 to 35 minutes until the top is browned and the custard is set.
  7. While baking, prepare the Eggnog Sauce by simmering eggnog, milk, sugar, and butter, then thicken with a flour mixture.
  8. Serve the baked French toast with cinnamon sugar dust and Eggnog Sauce.
