Ingredients

The burgers

  • 1 pound 99% lean ground turkey
  • 1 pound turkey sausage (sweet or spicy, casings removed)
  • cup panko bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons ground basil
  • 2 teaspoons ground oregano
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 8 ounces Asiago cheese
  • 8 ounces Mozzarella cheese
  • 6 whole whole wheat hamburger buns

The grilled vegetables

  • 1 large red onion (halved and thinly sliced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (thinly sliced)
  • 1 red bell pepper (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, turkey sausage, breadcrumbs, basil, oregano, fennel, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix gently without compacting the meat.
  3. Shape the mixture into 6 patties.
  4. Grill the patties for about 5 minutes on one side until browned, then flip and grill for another 5 minutes until cooked through.
  5. Top the burgers with mozzarella and Asiago cheese just before they are fully cooked.
  6. In a separate bowl, toss the sliced onions and bell peppers with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  7. Grill the vegetables in a grill basket until softened and lightly charred, about 8 minutes, turning frequently.
  8. Toast the buns if desired, then serve the burgers on the buns topped with grilled vegetables.
