Ingredients

The French Toast Sticks

  • 8 slices thick-cut whole wheat bread or Texas toast
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon grated orange zest or lemon zest (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • nonstick cooking spray

For Serving

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a baking sheet with nonstick spray.
  2. Mix sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon in a small bowl.
  3. Cut the bread into sticks.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, zest, salt, and remaining cinnamon.
  5. Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, ensuring they are coated but not soggy.
  6. Place the sticks on the baking sheet, ensuring they do not touch, and sprinkle with half the cinnamon sugar.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes, flip the sticks, spray lightly with cooking spray, and sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon sugar.
  8. Continue baking for another 10 minutes until golden and cooked through.
