Ingredients

The dough

  • 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons dry Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup milk
  • cup butter
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg

The filling

  • 8 oz bulk Italian sausage
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Fontina cheese
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup purchased basil pesto

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage and onion in a skillet until browned, then drain and chill.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 ¼ cups of flour, yeast, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Heat milk, butter, sugar, and salt until warm, then mix with the flour mixture and add the egg.
  4. Beat the mixture for 30 seconds, then on high for 3 minutes.
  5. Stir in remaining flour until a soft dough forms, then knead until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into thirds, resting for 10 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare loaf pans with parchment paper.
  9. Combine the sausage mixture with the cheeses in a bowl.
  10. Roll each dough portion into ropes and cut into 1-inch pieces.
  11. Layer dough pieces and cheese mixture in the loaf pans, repeating layers.
  12. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until golden, then cool slightly before serving.
