Ingredients

Baked 'Fried' Onions

  • 1 medium onion
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Green Bean Casserole

  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 pound fresh green beans
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • cups half-and-half

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
  2. Slice the onion and coat with flour, egg mixture, and panko breadcrumbs before baking until golden brown.
  3. Reduce the oven temperature to 400°F (204°C).
  4. Blanch the green beans in boiling salted water for 5 minutes, then transfer to ice water.
  5. In a skillet, melt butter and cook mushrooms with salt and pepper until moisture is released.
  6. Add garlic, flour, broth, and half-and-half, cooking until thickened.
  7. Combine the green beans and some fried onions with the sauce, then transfer to a baking dish.
  8. Top with remaining onions and bake until bubbly, about 15 minutes.
