Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and prepare the topping by pulsing bread, butter, salt, and pepper in a food processor until coarse crumbs form.
- Combine the bread mixture with fried onions in a bowl.
- In a pot, boil water with salt and cook the green beans until bright green and tender-crisp, then transfer to ice water.
- Melt butter in the same pot, add mushrooms, garlic, salt, and pepper, and cook until mushrooms release their liquid.
- Stir in flour and cook briefly before whisking in chicken broth and bringing to a boil.
- Reduce heat, whisk in cream, and simmer until the sauce thickens.
- Mix the green beans with the mushroom sauce and transfer to a baking dish, then sprinkle with the topping.
- Bake until the topping is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling, about 15 minutes.
