Ingredients

The French Toast

  • 10 to 12 slices thick slices of French bread, cinnamon bread, brioche bread, or Texas Toast
  • 5 large eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • ⅓ to ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • a pinch table salt

The Cinnamon Streusel

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted

For Serving (Optional)

  • Fresh berries
  • Powdered sugar
  • Syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a 9X13-inch baking pan.
  2. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes to get about 8 to 9 cups of lightly packed bread cubes and scatter them in the prepared pan.
  3. Blend or whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt, then pour the mixture evenly over the bread.
  4. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or up to 12 hours.
  5. Prepare the streusel by mixing the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl, then add the melted butter and mix until small clumps form. Refrigerate until ready to bake.
  6. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the top of the French toast mixture.
  7. Bake uncovered for 55 to 60 minutes, covering with foil if the topping browns too quickly.
  8. Serve warm with fresh berries, powdered sugar, and/or syrup.
