Ingredients

The burgers

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon fennel seeds
  • ½ teaspoon fine salt
  • teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 4 buns hamburger buns or large dinner rolls
  • fresh leaves basil

The sauce

  • cup pizza sauce

Optional toppings

  • to taste green leaf lettuce
  • to taste thinly sliced red onions
  • to taste fresh tomato slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to high heat (450-475℉) for indirect heat or medium-high heat (400℉) for direct heat.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, fennel seeds, salt, and pepper.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape into patties about ¼-inch thick, pressing a small indentation in the center of each.
  4. Grill the patties for 4 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until done.
  5. Top each patty with a slice of mozzarella cheese and grill for another 1-2 minutes until melted.
  6. Heat the pizza sauce in a saucepan or microwave until hot.
  7. Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun bottom, adding pizza sauce and basil leaves, then topping with the bun.
