Ingredients

Dough

  • 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons dry active yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk, lukewarm
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ¼ cup butter, room temperature

Filling

  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add lukewarm milk, egg, and butter, mixing until combined.
  3. Gradually add remaining flour until the dough is workable and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.
  5. Punch down the dough and let it rest for another 30 minutes.
  6. Sauté apples, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla in a saucepan until apples are tender.
  7. Roll dough into a 9x15 rectangle and spread 1/3 of the apple mixture on top.
  8. Roll the dough and cut it into 12-15 rolls, placing them in a greased skillet.
  9. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F and pour remaining apple mixture over the rolls.
  11. Bake for 15-25 minutes until lightly browned, then pour remaining sauce over before serving.
