Small Batch Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

The cinnamon rolls

  • cup warm Whole Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Light Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 teaspoon Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour
  • cup All-purpose Flour
  • a pinch kosher Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Clabber Girl Baking Powder®

The apple filling

  • 3 tablespoons Light Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Spice Islands® Saigon Cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • ½ cup chopped Honey Crisp Apple

The maple pecan icing

  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 2 ounces Cream Cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Maple Syrup
  • ¾ cup Powdered Sugar
  • ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • cup chopped Pecans

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, yeast, and brown sugar in a stand mixer and let sit until bubbly.
  2. Add Crisco®, egg, 1 cup of flour, and baking powder; mix until incorporated.
  3. Add remaining flour and salt, mixing until the dough is smooth and slightly tacky.
  4. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Prepare the filling by mixing brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon.
  6. Butter a small baking dish.
  7. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread butter over it, then sprinkle with apple and cinnamon mixture.
  8. Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into four equal rolls.
  9. Place rolls in the baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. While baking, make the icing by mixing butter and cream cheese, then adding maple syrup, powdered sugar, and pecans.
  12. Drizzle icing over warm rolls and let sit for five minutes before serving.
