Broiled Broccoli with Spicy Sesame-Scallion Sizzle

Ingredients

The sauce

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon sambal oelek or Sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 4 pieces scallions, thinly sliced

The broccoli

  • lbs broccoli
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil (such as grapeseed or canola)
  • to taste teaspoon kosher salt
  • to taste teaspoon flaky sea salt (such as Maldon, for finishing, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the broiler to high for at least 15 minutes and line a sheet pan with aluminum foil.
  2. In a small skillet, combine the sesame oil, coconut oil, sambal oelek or Sriracha, soy sauce, sesame seeds, and scallions over low heat to infuse the oils.
  3. Prepare the broccoli by cutting it into spears and tossing it with neutral oil and kosher salt on the prepared sheet pan.
  4. Broil the broccoli for 5 to 7 minutes, flipping halfway, until charred to your liking.
  5. Transfer the broiled broccoli to a serving platter.
  6. Increase the heat under the skillet to medium or high until the oil bubbles rapidly, then pour the sauce over the broccoli.
  7. Gently toss the broccoli with the sauce and serve immediately or at room temperature.
