Homemade Bread Bowls

Ingredients

  • 2 packets Red Star® Active Dry Yeast
  • 2 and ¼ cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 cups bread flour
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water or milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water and yeast in a bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add sugar, salt, olive oil, and 4 cups of flour to the yeast mixture and mix well.
  3. Knead the dough for 5-6 minutes until soft and slightly tacky, adding more flour if necessary.
  4. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, covering it to rise for about 90 minutes.
  5. Punch down the dough and cut it into 6 equal pieces, shaping each into a ball.
  6. Place the dough balls on baking sheets and let them rest for 20 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) and brush each dough ball with egg wash, scoring an X on top.
  8. Bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool the bread bowls and then cut out the tops and scoop out the insides to fill with soup.
