Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup real butter, chilled
  • ½ cup shortening, chilled
  • 3 tablespoons ice cold water
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider or white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Combine flour and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the chilled butter into the flour and add the chilled shortening in small chunks.
  3. Crumble the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix cold water, egg, and vinegar, then add to the flour mixture and mix until just moistened.
  5. Pat the dough into a flat disk, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a circle for a pie or smaller shapes for hand pies.
  7. For an unfilled pie shell, prick the crust all over with a fork and bake at 475°F for 10-12 minutes until lightly browned.
