Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into ½-inch pieces (about 8 cups)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a Dutch oven or large stockpot over medium heat until foaming.
  2. Add apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, water, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt; stir to combine.
  3. Cook over medium heat until the apples are softened and cooked through, about 25 to 30 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and cool completely.
