Ingredients

The dough

  • 2 cups areparina (masarepa)
  • 1 heaped tsp sea salt
  • 2 cups warm water

For cooking

  • 1 Tbsp avocado, coconut, or vegan butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and salt, stirring until the salt is dissolved.
  3. Gradually add the areparina to the water mixture, stirring until a loose dough forms.
  4. Let the dough rest covered with a towel for 5 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into large handfuls and roll each into a ball.
  6. Flatten each ball into a disc about ½-inch thick, ensuring the edges are smooth.
  7. Heat a pan over medium-high heat and add a little oil.
  8. Cook the arepas for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  9. Transfer the cooked arepas to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes until puffed and golden.
  10. Let them cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
