Venezuelan Arepas

Ingredients

The dough

  • 2 cups masarepa flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cups warm water
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese (optional)

For frying

  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Mix the masarepa flour and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Make a well in the center and add melted butter and warm water, stirring until no dry lumps remain.
  3. Adjust the consistency of the dough as needed, then let it rest for about 5 minutes.
  4. Form balls of dough, flatten them into patties about ¼-inch thick, and place them on greased parchment paper.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and fry the arepas in batches for 5-8 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Drain on paper towels, then cool on a wire rack before splitting and stuffing with desired fillings.
