Ingredients

  • 4 pounds apples, peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks
  • ½ gallon apple cider
  • 2 cups sugar
  • teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • 1 juice lemon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 225°F and prepare jars by placing them in the oven for at least 20 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, combine apples and enough apple cider to cover them, then bring to a simmer and cook until tender, about 20-30 minutes.
  3. Let the apples cool slightly, then puree them in a blender until smooth.
  4. Return the puree to the pot, bring it to a simmer, and gradually add sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and lemon juice while stirring.
  5. Continue to simmer and stir for 1 to 2 hours until the mixture thickens and darkens.
  6. Prepare a large pot of boiling water to sterilize the jars.
  7. Using tongs, fill each jar with the apple butter, leaving ¼ inch at the top, and seal with a lid.
  8. Process the jars in boiling water for 10 minutes.
