Slow Cooker Apple Butter

Ingredients

The apples

  • 3 pounds crisp sweet apples (such as Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady)

The flavorings

  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • a tiny pinch kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and dice the apples.
  2. Place the apples in a slow cooker and add maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  3. Stir to combine and cover the slow cooker.
  4. Cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 8 to 10 hours, stirring once halfway through.
  5. Once the apples are very tender, puree them to your desired consistency.
  6. Turn the slow cooker to high and cook uncovered for 2 additional hours until thickened.
  7. Stir in vanilla extract and salt, then taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  8. Transfer to jars or airtight containers and enjoy.
