Caramel Apples

Ingredients

The apples

  • 4 pieces Granny Smith apples
  • 4 pieces lollipop or wooden craft sticks

The caramel

  • 11 ounces package of caramels
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

The chocolate

  • 1 ½ cups chocolate chips or candy melts

The toppings

  • 1 cup assorted toppings (chopped nuts, candies, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Scrub the apples under hot running water to remove wax and dry them.
  2. Line a tray or baking sheet with wax paper and insert a stick into the stem end of each apple.
  3. Microwave caramels and cream in a bowl for 1 minute, stir, and continue microwaving in 10- to 20-second intervals until smooth.
  4. Dip each apple in the melted caramel, scraping off excess, and place on the baking sheet.
  5. Chill the apples until the caramel sets, about 30 minutes.
  6. Melt the chocolate or candy melts in the microwave in 30-second increments until smooth.
  7. Dip each apple halfway into the melted chocolate and roll in selected toppings.
  8. Chill until completely set, then serve or store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
