Ingredients

The apples and sticks

  • 12-14 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honey Crisp)
  • 12-14 (6-inch) lollipop sticks or wooden sticks

The caramel

  • 1 recipe homemade caramel
  • 2-3 pounds store bought caramel

The toppings

  • as needed white, milk, or semisweet chocolate or candy coating for dipping
  • as needed crushed Oreos, graham cracker crumbs, toffee bits, chopped candy bars, etc.

Instructions

  1. Remove stems from the apples and soak them in hot water mixed with lemon juice or vinegar for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Scrub the apples thoroughly to remove wax and dry them completely.
  3. Insert a stick into the top of each apple, pounding it in lightly.
  4. Prepare the caramel, ensuring it cools to 180-190 degrees F.
  5. Dip one side of the apple in caramel, slowly lifting it out to avoid bubbles, and repeat until fully coated.
  6. Scrape off excess caramel and place the apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool.
  7. Decorate the cooled apples with melted chocolate and desired toppings.
  8. Refrigerate until set and package in cellophane bags if desired.
