Ingredients

The brownie base

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup olive oil or melted coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

The chocolate

  • ½ cup dairy-free dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9-inch square baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, applesauce, olive oil, and vanilla extract until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  4. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just incorporated, then fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few crumbs.
  7. Let the brownies cool completely before cutting into squares.
