Ingredients

King Cake Dough

  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • teaspoons dry active yeast
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ounces unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 ounces sour cream
  • 3-3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Cinnamon Sugar Mixture

  • 2 ounces unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup pecans
  • cup all-purpose flour

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • teaspoon vanilla extract
  • as needed green, purple, and yellow sugar

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for about five minutes.
  2. Combine sugar, salt, milk, vanilla, and butter in a bowl and microwave until melted.
  3. Whisk eggs and sour cream into the lukewarm butter mixture, then mix thoroughly.
  4. Gradually add flour, lemon zest, and nutmeg, mixing until combined.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic for about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled, about one hour.
  7. Roll the dough into a 16x10-inch rectangle.
  8. Prepare the cinnamon sugar filling by mixing melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, pecans, and flour.
  9. Spread the filling over the dough, roll it up, and pinch the edges to seal.
  10. Form the rolled dough into a ring on a greased baking sheet and let it rise until doubled, about one hour.
  11. Preheat the oven to 375℉ (190℃).
  12. Brush the dough with egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  13. Cool for five minutes, then prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, milk, water, and vanilla.
  14. Spread the glaze over the warm cake and sprinkle with colored sugar before serving.
