Ingredients

The base

  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • cup pearl barley
  • cup millet
  • cup flax seeds
  • 8 cups water
  • ¾ tsp salt

The mix-ins

  • 2-3 medium over-ripe bananas, mashed
  • ½ cup pitted dates, chopped
  • ½ cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Bring water and salt to a boil in a large pot.
  2. Add rolled oats, barley, millet, and flax seeds to the boiling water and stir.
  3. Reduce heat to a slow simmer and cover the pot.
  4. Simmer for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally until grains are tender.
  5. Stir in mashed bananas, chopped dates, walnuts, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon.
  6. Remove from heat and let sit covered for 5 minutes.
  7. Serve hot with desired toppings.
