Instructions
- Melt the butter in a medium Dutch oven or large saucepan over medium heat, or warm the pan if omitting butter.
- Add the steel-cut oats and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring often, until fragrant.
- Stir in the apple chunks, water, and salt, then bring the mixture to a simmer over high heat.
- Once simmering, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for about 35 minutes, stirring every five minutes.
- After cooking, remove from heat and let the oatmeal rest for 5 minutes to thicken.
- Taste and add maple syrup or honey if desired.
- Serve in bowls with your choice of toppings.
