Ingredients

The base

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth

The tomatoes and beans

  • 1 15 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 15 oz can pinto beans
  • 1 15 oz can kidney beans
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste

The spices

  • 3 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • pinch cayenne powder

The sweetener

  • 2 tbsp honey

The oil

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Optional toppings

  • sour cream
  • Greek yogurt
  • cheese
  • green onions
  • Fritos
  • cilantro

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  2. Add diced onion and cook for 2-3 minutes, then add ground beef and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook until the meat is browned.
  4. Stir in chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne powder.
  5. Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, pinto beans, kidney beans, tomato paste, honey, and beef broth, stirring to combine.
  6. Bring to a light boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Serve with optional toppings as desired.
