Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 whole large onion
  • ¾ pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste salt
  • to taste fresh ground black pepper
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat and add sliced onions, cooking until softened.
  2. Reduce heat and continue cooking onions until deep golden, about 20-25 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, then form into 2 patties.
  4. Cook patties in a skillet with butter over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side until desired doneness.
  5. Assemble the sandwich by layering cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and bread.
  6. Butter the skillet and cook the assembled sandwich until browned, pressing down with a spatula.
  7. Flip the sandwich and cook until the other side is browned and cheese is melted.
  8. Slice in half and serve immediately.
