Ingredients

  • 2 pounds green beans
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium shallot
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup white wine
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic
  • ½ cup shredded gruyere
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 1-2 minutes, then drain and transfer to a casserole dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter and sauté the sliced shallot until tender.
  4. Whisk in flour and cook until golden brown, then gradually add wine, broth, soy sauce, and milk, whisking after each addition.
  5. Simmer the sauce until it thickens, then stir in grated garlic, salt, and gruyere cheese.
  6. Pour the sauce over the green beans, cover with foil, and bake for 25 minutes.
  7. Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes, then toss the green beans to coat in the sauce.
  8. Top with crispy fried onions and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
  9. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.
