Christmas Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

The cookies

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cup milk

The frosting

  • cup butter (cold and firm)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream (cold)
  • to taste food coloring

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. In a mixer, beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, then add egg yolks and vanilla.
  3. Reduce speed and gradually add flour mixture and milk until just incorporated.
  4. Shape dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 2 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Roll chilled dough to 1/8-inch thickness and cut with cookie cutters.
  7. Transfer cookies to baking sheets and bake until edges are lightly browned, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  8. Cool cookies completely on wire racks before frosting.
  9. Beat butter and powdered sugar for frosting, then add vanilla and milk to desired consistency.
  10. Color frosting with food coloring and decorate cooled cookies.
