Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 batch easy whole wheat pizza dough or store-bought pizza dough

The sauce

  • 1 large can whole San Marzano tomatoes (28 ounces)

The toppings

  • 12 ounces ovoline-type mozzarella or other fresh mozzarella balls
  • 1 handful fresh basil, thinly sliced plus small leaves
  • to taste extra-virgin olive oil
  • to taste flaky sea salt or kosher salt
  • optional red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 500°F with a rack in the upper third.
  2. Crush the canned tomatoes in a bowl and spread about ¾ cup of the sauce on each pizza dough, leaving an inch around the edges.
  3. Drain and pat dry the mozzarella, then tear it into smaller pieces and distribute it over the pizza.
  4. Bake each pizza on the top rack for about 10 to 12 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  5. Top with fresh basil, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and add red pepper flakes if desired. Slice and serve.
