Ingredients

The dough

  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1 tsp active yeast
  • 1 tsp organic cane sugar
  • 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • ¾ tsp baking powder
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 3 Tbsp plain dairy-free yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp olive or avocado oil

For serving (optional)

  • 2 Tbsp vegan butter or coconut oil (melted)
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • to taste fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by mixing it with warm water and sugar, and let it sit until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and oil to the dry ingredients and mix until sticky.
  4. Knead the dough gently on a floured surface and form it into a ball, then let it rise in a warm place for at least 2 hours.
  5. Divide the dough into 6 pieces and shape them into balls, letting them rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Roll out each ball into an oval or circle and prepare a cast-iron pan over medium heat.
  7. Cook each naan for about 1 minute on each side until browned, adding toppings as desired.
  8. Brush with melted vegan butter or oil and serve immediately.
