Ingredients

  • 2 pound broccoli, cut into small florets
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • cups milk
  • teaspoons salt
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. 1. Bring water to a boil and blanch the broccoli florets for 2 minutes, then cool in cold water for 10 minutes and drain.
  2. 2. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  3. 3. In a saucepan, melt half of the butter over medium heat, whisk in the flour, then stir in the milk and season with salt, nutmeg, and pepper, stirring until combined.
  4. 4. In a greased baking dish, layer the broccoli, sprinkle cheddar cheese on top, and pour the milk mixture over it.
  5. 5. Melt the remaining butter in a skillet, add breadcrumbs, and cook until golden brown, then sprinkle over the gratin.
  6. 6. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly, then serve hot.
