Ingredients

The marinade

  • 1 ½ tablespoons tamari
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • to taste freshly cracked black pepper

The main ingredient

  • 1 8-ounce package tempeh
  • neutral oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine tamari, liquid smoke, maple syrup, and pepper.
  2. Slice the tempeh into thin strips, about 1-inch wide and ¼-inch thick.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the tempeh to the skillet and cook until crispy and browned, about 4 to 5 minutes, then flip and repeat on the other side.
  5. Once crispy on both sides, add the marinade to the skillet and reduce the heat to medium.
  6. Cook while flipping occasionally until the tempeh is coated and the sauce has thickened, about 1 to 3 minutes.
  7. Remove the tempeh from the skillet and serve hot.
