Ingredients

The marinade

  • 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce, tamari or liquid aminos
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

The main ingredient

  • 8 ounces tempeh
  • 1-2 teaspoons coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Slice the tempeh as thin as you can without letting it fall apart.
  2. Steam the tempeh for 10 minutes to remove bitterness and help it absorb flavors.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the liquid smoke, maple syrup, soy sauce, and smoked paprika.
  4. Let the steamed tempeh cool slightly, then marinate it in the mixture for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  5. Heat coconut oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the marinated tempeh for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned.
  6. Serve the tempeh bacon in a sandwich, salad, or as desired.
