Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 8 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • as needed for brushing buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it forms small bits and flakes.
  4. Pour buttermilk into the flour mixture and stir until the dough comes together.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat it into a ¾-inch thick circle.
  6. Cut the dough into eight biscuits using a round cutter.
  7. Transfer the biscuits to a baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  8. Brush each biscuit with buttermilk and sprinkle sugar on top.
  9. Increase the oven temperature to 425ºF and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden.
  10. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack or serve immediately.
