Ingredients

The donuts

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 Tablespoon poppy seeds
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cool
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon zest

The lemon glaze

  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1–2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and spray the donut pan with non-stick spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, poppy seeds, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the wet ingredients: melted butter, egg, sugar, milk, sour cream, vanilla, lemon juice, and lemon zest until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined without overmixing.
  5. Spoon the batter into the donut cavities, filling them 2/3 to 3/4 full using a zipped-top bag for ease.
  6. Bake for 9-10 minutes until the edges are lightly browned, then cool on a wire rack.
  7. While the donuts cool, whisk together the glaze ingredients.
  8. Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and place them back on the wire rack to set.
