Ingredients

The cake

  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon table salt
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream or plain yogurt

The topping

  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9" x 9" pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine softened butter, eggs, vanilla, and sugar.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder.
  4. Gradually add 1/3 of the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing completely before adding 1/3 of the sour cream. Repeat until all flour and sour cream are incorporated.
  5. Mix together the topping ingredients and set aside.
  6. Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan, sprinkle half of the topping mixture over it, then add the remaining batter and top with the remaining topping.
  7. Bake for 30-45 minutes or until a pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool for 20-30 minutes before cutting.
