Slow Cooker Brisket with BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

The brisket

  • 1 3 to 5 pound beef brisket
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar

The seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

The vegetables and sauce

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  1. Prick the brisket all over with a meat tenderizer or fork.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, thyme, garlic powder, cumin, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Rub the seasoning mixture all over the brisket and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight.
  4. Place the sliced onion in the bottom of the slow cooker and place the brisket on top.
  5. Mix the BBQ sauce and water, then pour it over the brisket.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 10 hours or high for 6 hours.
  7. Once cooked, transfer the brisket to a cutting board and tent with foil. Let it rest for at least 20 minutes.
  8. Slice the brisket against the grain or shred it and serve with the sauce.
