Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • cup granulated sugar
  • tablespoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons canola oil

Filling

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • tablespoons ground cinnamon

Cream Cheese Icing

  • 4 ounces full-fat brick cream cheese
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough by whisking warm buttermilk, sugar, and yeast together, then let it sit until foamy.
  2. Beat in remaining sugar, softened butter, eggs, and salt, then gradually add flour until the dough comes together.
  3. Knead the dough until soft and slightly tacky, then let it rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle.
  5. Spread softened butter over the dough, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, then roll it up tightly.
  6. Cut the rolled dough into 8 large pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
  7. Cover the rolls and let them rise until puffy.
  8. Preheat the oven and bake the rolls until lightly browned.
  9. Prepare the icing by beating cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, cream, and vanilla until smooth.
  10. Spread the icing over warm rolls and serve.
