Ingredients

The meat and seasoning

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • ½ to ¾ cup chopped white or yellow onion
  • 1 to 3 cloves garlic, finely minced or 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ to ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (8-ounce) tomato sauce
  • 1 unit jalapeño, seeded and finely minced (optional)

The shells and toppings

Instructions

  1. 1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or turkey with onion and a pinch of salt and pepper until the meat is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. 2. Drain any excess grease if needed.
  3. 3. Return the skillet to heat and stir in garlic, chili powder, cumin, coriander, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. 4. Add the tomato sauce and minced jalapeños (if using) and simmer for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. 5. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper if necessary.
  6. 6. Serve in taco shells with your choice of toppings.
