Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350℉/175 degrees C.
- Prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking oil or butter.
- Melt butter and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cornstarch, and stir to combine. Cook for about 7 minutes until apples are tender.
- Remove the filling from heat and let it cool.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
- Add butter to the flour mixture and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the buttermilk until just combined.
- Pour the apple filling into the prepared pan.
- Scoop the dough over the filling, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is cooked through and the filling is bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving, optionally with vanilla ice cream.
