Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and coat a 9' x 13' pan with cooking spray.
- Prepare the filling by tossing the apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water in a large bowl.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pan in an even layer.
- For the topping, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl.
- Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles small coarse pebbles.
- Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract to form a batter.
- Spoon the batter over the apples and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let cool for at least 20 minutes before serving with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired.
