Ingredients

The apple filling

  • 10 cups apples, peeled, cored and cut into ¾ inch pieces
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons water

The cobbler topping

  • 1⅔ cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup butter, cold, cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sugar
  • as needed none cooking spray
  • as desired none vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and coat a 9' x 13' pan with cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the filling by tossing the apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water in a large bowl.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pan in an even layer.
  4. For the topping, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl.
  5. Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles small coarse pebbles.
  6. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract to form a batter.
  7. Spoon the batter over the apples and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. Let cool for at least 20 minutes before serving with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired.
