Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the cold butter and mix until incorporated.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and orange zest.
- Slowly add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture while mixing on low speed.
- In a small bowl, toss currants with 1 tablespoon of flour, then mix into the dough.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead a few times to form a round loaf.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet and cut an X on top.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack and serve warm or at room temperature.
