Ingredients

The asparagus

  • 1 ½ pounds thick asparagus

The seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Optional toppings

  • to taste fresh lemon juice
  • 2-3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan
  • 2 tablespoons thick aged balsamic or balsamic glaze
  • to taste minced shallots mixed with lemon juice and olive oil
  • to taste chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, basil, or mint

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium heat (375°F to 400°F).
  2. Snap off the woody ends of the asparagus.
  3. Drizzle the asparagus with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper, then toss to coat.
  4. Place the asparagus on the grill perpendicular to the grates.
  5. Grill for 6 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until fork tender.
  6. Transfer to a platter and add any desired toppings before serving.
