Caramel Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ - 1 cup water
  • ¾ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 ounces unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¾ teaspoon salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and enough water to soak the sugar.
  2. Heat on medium and stir until the sugar dissolves and the water is clear.
  3. Cook without stirring until the mixture turns amber, about 10 minutes, swirling the pot as needed.
  4. For a deeper color, cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  5. Warm the heavy cream in the microwave or stovetop.
  6. Reduce heat and whisk in the heavy cream and butter into the saucepan, stirring until fully incorporated.
  7. Stir in vanilla extract if desired, then remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  8. Store in a jar or airtight container; it can be kept at room temperature for 2-3 days, refrigerated for up to a month, or frozen for 3 months.
