Ingredients

The Tuna and Marinade

  • 1 pound fresh ahi tuna steaks
  • cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • ½ pepper jalapeno or serrano (seeded and minced)
  • cup raw sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

The Slaw

  • 3 cups green cabbage (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup radishes (finely chopped, greens removed)
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro leaves (chopped)
  • cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup red onion (diced)
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • to taste pepper

Instructions

  1. Marinate the tuna by whisking together soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and jalapeno, then pour over the tuna in a shallow dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Roll the marinated tuna in sesame seeds to coat.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and sear the tuna for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until mostly pink in the middle.
  4. Pour some marinade over the tuna towards the end of cooking and cook for an additional minute.
  5. Slice the tuna thinly and serve with warm corn tortillas and the prepared slaw.
  6. For the slaw, mix together cabbage, radishes, cilantro, sour cream, red onion, lime juice, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
