Toffee Chocolate Chip Bars

toasted, coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13 inch pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and brown sugar together.
- Grate the cold butter and add it to the flour mixture, mixing until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Lightly beat the egg and drizzle it over the mixture, combining it well.
- Reserve ½ cup of the chocolate chips and mix the rest into the dough.
- Set aside 1 ½ cups of the dough mixture and press the remaining mixture into the prepared pan.
- Bake the crust for 10 minutes.
- Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the hot crust and spread it evenly.
- Reserve ¼ cup of toffee bits, sprinkle the rest over the condensed milk.
- Top with the reserved dough mixture and the reserved chocolate chips.
- Return to the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool completely before cutting into bars.
