Ingredients

The base

  • 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • cup packed dark brown sugar
  • ¾ cup cold salted butter
  • 1 large egg

The toppings

  • 1 12-ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 ¾ cups toffee bits
  • 1 cup toasted, coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13 inch pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and brown sugar together.
  3. Grate the cold butter and add it to the flour mixture, mixing until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Lightly beat the egg and drizzle it over the mixture, combining it well.
  5. Reserve ½ cup of the chocolate chips and mix the rest into the dough.
  6. Set aside 1 ½ cups of the dough mixture and press the remaining mixture into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake the crust for 10 minutes.
  8. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the hot crust and spread it evenly.
  9. Reserve ¼ cup of toffee bits, sprinkle the rest over the condensed milk.
  10. Top with the reserved dough mixture and the reserved chocolate chips.
  11. Return to the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Cool completely before cutting into bars.
